The iPhone is a very useful handheld device that is more than just a phone. The iPhone is a product with many uses including accessing the internet, playing video games, making phone calls, accessing a GPS or Global Positioning System for directions and locations, and many other things.

Now, suppose there is an object or an item whose dimensions are not available, and it is very important that the measurements or dimensions of the object are obtained. If we do not have a tape measure handy, we could easily use the iPhone to get the measurements or dimensions of the gadget. A new application for the iPhone can come in handy and help get measurements of objects whose width and height you desire.

The application is known as RulerPhone and operates in 3 easy steps. First, a card the size of a credit card is placed right in front of the object whose dimensions are required. Then a picture of the object with the card centered right in the middle is taken. The card and the object should both be facing the camera. The iPhone application will display a blue card placeholder. The card should be aligned as accurately as possible with this display. It will be necessary to zoom in and out until the alignment is as perfect as possible. This is because this image will be used as a measure or reference to provide the object’s dimensions. Take a picture and then activate or click on the measure application. Dragging a finger across the screen will enable a measuring ruler to display and hence enable one to take measurements of the object as desired.

This may be a somewhat cumbersome way of obtaining measurements, but it is pretty accurate if done properly and does come in handy in certain situations. One problem you may encounter is the limitation that this iPhone application has in the dimensions it can measure. It will only measure objects up to a certain length or width. Another hitch is that the accuracy of the measurements taken or dimensions obtained will depend on the accuracy of the picture taken of the centered card. If the object was accurately centered then the measurements will be accurate. However if there were errors during centering of the card there will be errors in the measured dimensions.

This application is quite useful once it is properly learned and properly applied. For people who do not carry a measuring tape around and might just need to take measurements then it is a handy application to have. It will provide a fast and easy way to obtain measurements. The controls are easy to use and appealing to the eye.
