Swimming Pool Maintenance for Dummies

If you are planning on building a swimming pool in your backyard or if you already have one, you must be aware of the fact that maintaining a swimming pool is an important part of the deal! While it is not a difficult proposition to keep your pool clean (i.e. if you follow certain instructions), neglecting to clean it will lead to a potentially toxic and unsafe environment for you and your family.
Maintaining your pool is a threefold job. Your primary responsibility is to keep your pool free from contaminants by cleaning it regularly. Most pool systems are likely to be fitted with an automatic cleaner that uses sand to remove the contaminants in water. But remember that your filter will remove only smaller particles in the water. You must use a net to manually remove larger things like leaves. Your filter should be in operation for a quarter of a day when you are using the pool frequently.
Another part of keeping your pool clean is vacuuming it. Despite having an automatic pool cleaner, manually vacuuming it once in a while is a good idea. Contrary to popularly held notions, vacuuming needs to be done quite frequently, such as once a week, especially when you are using the pool a lot. Before you vacuum manually, you should use a scrubber to scrape the walls of the pool. This will allow the dust particles to settle at the bottom to be sucked out by the use of your vacuum cleaner.
Your second most important job in maintaining a pool is adjusting the chemical contents of the pool. Cleaning will keep the pool safe from contaminants like dust particles. But excessive levels of certain chemicals could be equally foreboding to the well-being of swimmers. Measure the chemical levels and pH level of your pool water. You can accomplish this by buying a water test kit, which you can find in most hardware stores. Using this you can ascertain whether any of the chemicals have reached intolerable levels. If so, you can balance the chemical levels to bring them back to a safe level. Your water will be safe and clean.
Finally, taking care of things that have gone wrong is the third aspect of swimming pool maintenance. Problems such as algae formation, cloudy water, and chlorine deposits tend to occur in some cases. The best advice is to stop using the pool until you get the problem resolved. Algae can be removed by setting higher levels of chlorine. When you feel that your pool water is foggy you must increase the chemical levels and clean the water more frequently. If your water gives off the familiar chlorine smell, it could mean you do not have enough chlorine in your pool to break down the non-organic matter. Make sure you follow all these steps, and enjoy swimming in your backyard!
