Deck Under-drain Systems

If you are considering ways of channeling rainwater away from your home, especially your deck, deck under-drain could be an option for you. It becomes more important in regions that receive a heavy rainfall throughout the year as an excess of water accumulated on your deck can result in serious problems unless properly channeled away.

Types of Deck Under-drains

There are different types of drainages you can go for depending on the place you want to install it. A deck under-drain system for a timber deck helps you divert the rainwater coming in via the gaps in planks of timber deck away from the deck so that the deck area remains dry. You can also make use of the area under deck as a storage area. On the other hand, if you want to install a drainage system for pavement of a driveway, you should opt for a channel drain that runs along the pavement or driveway and collects water through underground pipes. These drainages generally have a locking mechanism for grates that can be opened and cleaned up.

Advantages of Deck Under-drain System

Deck under-drain not only protects your deck from heavy rains and prevents your landscape from flooding but also protects your grass from getting converted into muddy patches. It also prevents the risk of algae and moss building up on your deck, driveway, or even pavement due to bad drainage. Properly installed deck drainage can actually help you avoid risking your garden to fungal diseases by diverting the rainwater away from your deck. A good deck drainage system also helps you protect your timber deck from rotting and making your house look ugly.

Self-Designed Deck Under-drain Systems for Your House

You can begin by demarcating the area within each joist under the deck. This will help you position the brackets in a better way. You should also place the brackets in a way that the channels slope down, so as to enable water to run off. The second step will be to get pieces of F bracket and long nails and fit them into the space between the joists. Make sure you leave some space for seasonal expansion and contraction before fastening the brackets, so that your drainage is not damaged even in climatic extremes. Then you can measure the sections that would go along the joists and fix more F brackets to set in there.

After you are done with fixing all the brackets in the right places (parallel to the jolts), you can go ahead with fitting vinyl sections between the brackets. You can simply put the vinyl panels at one end of a bracket and fit it as needed. This brings you to the final step: installation of down pipes for carrying the water away from your deck to a nearby marsh. You should also ensure that you have installed proper gutters to keep your grass from getting flooded in heavy rains.
