Weatherproofing French Doors

A simple way to save money is to weatherproof your exterior doors. By weatherproofing you can save money on bills in summer and winter. Whether the climate is cold or hot, weatherproofing will give you peace of mind.
Before purchasing the weatherproofing materials in the hardware store you should check to be sure the door is aligned properly. Over the years or months the door may drop or fall causing alignment problems, which may cause gaps through which air can escape. It is important to remove the door and reset and shim the hinges if there is any gap to even things out. If you want to set up a new door at the bottom that has a drip edge, then it is very important to plane the bottom door first, and then check whether the strike plates and latches are aligned. Sometimes you may also need to replace the old door that has a drip edge on the outside of the door.
The materials you need to buy for weatherproofing depend on the severity of your problem. If you have cracks or exposed joints in the door then you should have caulk, weather stripping, and backer rod. Backer rod is very flexible rod and it is a round material; it is made up of polyethylene and it is also used for chinking joints. The backer rods create a surface to back and insulate.
First you have to check the door and the area around the door to find the cracks or gaps through which air is coming through. Check whether there are any cracks, gaps, or chinks in between the door and the wall or floor. If you have a chink in the door then you have to use the backer rod. You have to put caulk in the one end and you have to cut the edge of the backer rod and then you have to insert the backer rod into the gap. Once the backer rod is placed correctly, you have to caulk the lower edge and upper edge both. If there is any trim needed for the backer rod, you have to nail the newly fixed area.
In this way you can weatherproof your French doors. This will help you to be comfortable in the house both in the cold season and in the summer season. But before buying the weatherproofing materials you must check the door condition.
