Flooring Ideas for Basements

ppl-kid-07 There are many flooring options to choose from for a basement. One may be trying to clean up a dingy concrete floor or finishing off a basement re-model. The following are different types of flooring options one can utilize.

Basement Floor Tile

Basement floor tiles come in various shapes and styles. One can create a custom look from a simple pattern to a more robust complex pattern. Tiles are easy to replace—if one breaks, it can be easily repaired. In addition, most ceramic tile is waterproof and stain-resistant. This is important in case your basement ever gets water or moisture. One thing to keep in mind about ceramic floor tiling is that it can be cold to the touch. Oftentimes basements are the coldest place in the house. You might consider installing radiant heating underneath the tile to warm the floor. Also, ceramic tile can be expensive, so look for sales before choosing this floor type. Lastly, these tiles can be heavy. If you don’t have a rear entrance to a basement, be prepared to carry heavy tiles down to the work area to be installed.

Epoxy Floor Cover

This is a very cheap way of cleaning up and covering a concrete floor. Oftentimes, basement floors get stained from water or marked up from moving objects, footprints, etc. Painting a basement floor with epoxy, will give the floor a clean look. In addition, one can get a sealant, which will give it a high-gloss finish. This solution can be very cheap, from $100-$200 for materials if you do the work yourself. If you are not familiar with how to install an epoxy floor, call a professional. He will be better at getting a consistent finish to your floor. This can cost between $500 and $1000, depending on the size of your basement.

Carpeting

Carpeting is another option to consider in a basement. All one needs to do is install tack strips around the edge of the concrete slab so the carpet can be attached. You may also want to put down an anti-mold carpet padding. The cost for carpet can range from $1.00 to $5.00 per square foot on average. One must maintain a dry basement, or the carpet will get ruined. Make certain you have a dehumidifier installed for the spring and summer months. This will help reduce the moisture in the basement.

Laminate Basement Flooring

This may be the best option for installing a basement floor. One will want to put down a sub-floor with a vapor barrier before installing a laminate floor. These floors are easy to assemble; most come with tongue and groove markings for easy connection. Get books or watch installation techniques on the internet on how to lay a laminate floor. Be certain you have the correct tools as well. Laminate floors can range from 50 cents a square foot up to $4 dollars per square foot on average.
