Pool Maintenance With Bleach
Swimming pools require routine care and periodic maintenance, apart from the balancing of the water chemistry and the establishment of a proper sanitizer level. In order to preserve or restore the aesthetics of the pool and maintain good operating conditions, seasonal practices should be followed.
Bleaching could be a good solution for pool maintenance. Bleach is sodium hypochlorite, not as strong as pool shock or pool chlorine. It takes three to four times as much bleach to equal one gallon of pool chlorine in a swimming pool. This means we need to add three to four gallons of Clorox for every gallon of pool chlorine that is normally added.
Really, it is not cost effective, but will work in a pinch.
Some of the generic household chemicals can be used for pool maintenance.
- Baking soda is the same thing as the total alkalinity increaser you find in pool supply stores (sodium bicarbonate or the more proper sodium hydrogen carbonate). 1.5 lbs per 10,000 gallons of pool water will increase total alkalinity by 10ppm.
- Household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) can be used to shock the pool. This is especially important if you don’t want to deal with calcium precipitation (especially in hard water). 1/2 gallon of household bleach (non scented) per 10,000 gallons of pool water will increase the chlorine level by 5ppm.
- Muriatic acid can be used to lower the total alkalinity of a pool. You can find this in almost all hardware stores; it’s sold as a cleaner. 1.3 pints per 10,000 gallons of pool water will decrease the total alkalinity by 10ppm.
- Borax (the stuff in the green box in the laundry aisle) can be used to buffer the pH and raise it. 1/2 cup per 10,000 gallons will increase your pH. How much depends on quite a few factors so you will have to adjust according to the results you receive in your particular pool.
