But proper and timely maintenance is very much required for this kind of pool. A guide will provide you with a set of tricks and tips that will help you to save time, money and energy. With a set of ideas to do it yourself you can be very independent.

Salt-water pools are not actually ocean-water pools . They contain only 10% as much salt as ocean water. Ocean water irritates the eyes of the swimmer and also the skin. Salt need not be added continuously as it does not evaporate quickly.

The most common problems salt-water pools face are:

Run-away chlorine: Salt creates chlorine. Excess chlorine can damage certain parts of the pool. Therefore the water has to be tested for its chlorine content and maintained and balanced properly. We can check the salt content by referring to the display panel found on the chlorine generator. There are many saline test strips available at most pool supply stores. They can be used to test the salt content in the pool, which ideally should be around 50 pounds for 1250 gallons of water. Chlorine generators are also now available. An adequate amount of chlorine is needed to keep the pool clean and free from algae, bacteria, germs, etc. The salt along with the chlorine generator generates adequate amounts of chlorine to help to keep the pool clean.

Rain: If your area receives very high amounts of rain, you have to check the salt level continuously as the rain pushes out salt from the pool.

Salt also attracts calcium build-up. Due to this, scaling on the surface of the pool is possible especially in case of plaster pools.

The water of the pool has to be filtered daily. The filter system can be run for about 8 hours a day. Removing foreign matter and outside dirt like leaves, bugs, etc. is very important. We can skim the pool with a skimmer attached to a long pole to remove all floating materials. Vacuuming is necessary to clean the bottom of the pool. The total alkalinity has to be tested and the range should be between 80 and 100. Also the ph balance needs to be maintained between 7.2 and 7.8. The sanitizer level should read 1 to 3 parts per million. The swimming pool has to be drained out completely once a year. The walls and the surfaces have to be scrubbed clean. The filters have to be changed or cleaned by soaking them overnight in a cleaner specially made for this purpose.
