Even though the economy is in the tank and money is tight, it is still possible to remodel your kitchen on a budget of less than $5000. The first tip is to keep your cabinets. One of the most expensive parts of a kitchen renovation is replacing the existing cabinets. If the cabinets are in working order, this is not necessary. The cabinets can be painted a neutral color for less than $100. The hardware can also be replaced with a more modern style for very low cost. This simple fix can do wonders in updating a kitchen. After painting the cabinets, it is time to look at the countertops and backsplash.
To replace the countertops, there are a few choices. For the most complete upgrade, you can put in granite tiles. They are much cheaper than a slab of granite and if you choose dark granite with dark grout, you can’t see the grout lines from a distance. The tiles are a fraction of the price of a slab of granite. Another way to redo the countertops is to resurface the laminate. Home improvement stores have kits that can resurface up to 30 square feet of counter space for around $250. If your countertops are in decent shape, then this might be the way to go.
Backsplashes are also easy to change. You can get a vinyl or sheet metal backsplash instead of tile. It can be a do-it-yourself project that is a lot easier than placing tiles. It will also produce a modern look.
Another cheap fix in the kitchen is to replace the light fixtures. Replace the old fluorescent lighting with modern track lighting—it will go a long way to updating your kitchen and is possible to do for less than $100. The lights can create a warmer, more modern feel than that created by the old fluorescent fixtures.
Another part of the kitchen remodel is the floors. There are many laminate products available that are low priced and easy to install. A new floor in a 200-square-foot kitchen can be installed professionally for less than $1000. If you have the time and ability, you can install a floor for less than half that amount.
If you have money left in the budget, then you can replace your appliances. If you go to the home improvement store, they have scratch and dent appliances available for sale. Often times the scratches or dents are in places that can’t be seen when the appliance is in place. It is possible to get stainless steel appliances at a big discount if you look for them.
Kitchen remodeling can be the most expensive project to be done in a house. But if you are willing to do the work that you are able to do and reuse what you have instead of replacing it, it is possible to have a new, modern kitchen for $5000.
