Do you need to weatherproof your screened porch? Here are a couple of suggestions.
If your screened porch is made of wood, you will want to make sure it is sealed. Thompson’s Water Seal works well. There are also other brands, including generics, which work just as well. Make sure to compare the ingredients to the more popular brands if you decide to opt for the cheaper product. Using this seal usually requires no more than a paintbrush. You simply paint the sealer on.
If the porch has been painted, you need to check the condition of the paint; if the paint is cracked or peeling, the wood underneath will not be weatherproofed unless it was treated. It is pretty easy to tell whether the wood is treated. If the wood looks faded and fibrous, it most likely hasn’t been treated. When in doubt, treat. If the paint is in ill repair, it will need to be removed before wood treatment can commence. There are many ways to take paint off. You can sand it off, use paint remover, or scrape it away, depending on the condition of the paint. Once the paint is removed, apply the wood treatment according to the directions on the can. This will seal the wood.
If your screened porch is covered with siding, the siding should have already been treated at the manufacturer. This usually does not require any more treatment, but you can consult the paperwork that came with the siding or look the siding up online to find its weatherproofing and the lifetime of the weatherproofing. If this is out of date, the manufacturer can also provide the proper remedy for resealing.
There are a few basic options for weatherproofing the screens depending on the weather you are expecting. The easiest way to weatherproof screens is to buy the shrinkable plastic at your local department store. This storm window comes with double-sided tape, which you put around the outside of the screen on the window frame. Then you cut the plastic to fit, adhere it to the tape, and use a blow dryer to shrink it tight. This will work if the weather is not too inclement. There is also the option of purchasing glass storm windows, which can be installed to protect the screen and inside of the porch, but depending on the size of screen, this option can become extremely expensive. Another way to help waterproof the screens of the porch is to buy plywood, cut it to fit, and attach it to the outside of the window, similar to bracing for a hurricane. Using insulation around the borders of the wood will help in sealing the water out.
There are other methods to be found on the web, but these are the most cost-effective ways to weatherproof a screened porch.
