Toilet Plumbing Problems and Solutions

Toilets are not something that most people think about on a daily basis. We use them multiple times a day, expect them to work, and are irritated when something doesn’t work right. Although fixing a toilet is often an easy process, toilet repair is completely foreign to most people, thus creating an annoying, inconvenient problem.
There are several things that can go wrong with a toilet, including clogging, continuous running, leaking, broken flush handle, and using too much water. Although clogging is often an easy fix with a plunger, every now and again the actual pipes will get clogged, creating a bit more of a problem. In this case, you will need to hire a pipe replacer or pipe cleaner.
A running toilet is a very common problem that will more than likely happen sometime or another. The usual cause of this is the malfunction of a valve in the bottom of the toilet tank. If the valve is working properly, it will not let any water through until you flush the toilet. But if the valve is not working properly, water can escape into the bowl and it will continue to run. More often than not, replacing the valve will do the trick. This is inexpensive and easy to fix yourself.
A leaky toilet bowl is one of the most feared problems, as it can be messy and damaging if it is not fixed promptly. The most common cause of leaky toilets is a break or wearing of the toilet’s wax ring. Fixing it might not be convenient, as it requires you to unbolt the toilet and lift it up to replace the ring, but it is very inexpensive and a quick fix.
A broken flush handle is also a very common problem. As they are often made of plastic, the constant use means the handle is bound to break sometime or another. A new handle should cost no more than $5, but the most important thing is to get the right handle style. Getting the wrong one will not allow the toilet to function properly and will lead to more problems.
As the toilet is often the biggest water user in a given household, it is a great idea to install devices to save water every time you flush. The most common way to do this is to fill a plastic half-gallon jug with water and place it in the tank. The water displacement makes the toilet tank think it is fuller sooner, thus using less water. It is estimated that this method could save millions of gallons of water a year. In addition, a new, low-flush toilet can be purchased and installed for less than $350, and the money you save on your water bill over the years could make it worth it.
These are the most common problems with toilets, and although toilet problems aren’t fun to fix, knowing the basics can make the problems a lot easier to deal with.
