French doors can be tricky to find the appropriate covering for. This is because they let in more light than windows and they have a pesky little door handle to deal with when thinking about installing curtains, coverings, or blinds. Because French doors are so special, the best treatment would be something that still lets you see the French doors and through them, not something that covers them up. A good solution is simple vertical blinds.

Vertical blinds themselves can be a bit difficult to work with because they take up a lot more space than normal window blinds—let’s face it, they are bulky. Why bother fitting blinds to French doors? Well, aside from their size and weight, they are actually quite simple to install, come in a complete package (all the necessities for installing included), come in several varieties, and don’t require any special tools to install. Blinds are a great match for French doors because otherwise French doors let in a lot of light and prying eyes.

French doors are often made of fancy wood, so drilling too many holes into the wood would ruin the overall effect of your beautiful doors. Instead, the best way to install blinds is to fit them on the door panels. All you need to get started is a cordless drill, a small stepping stool, your blinds and mounting hardware, and the instructions for installation! Make sure that you at least glance over the instructions. Although these may be quite basic, every style and brand has a bit of variety in how their products should be installed.

First, make sure you measure correctly, and decide whether you want to install your blinds mounted on the inside (the door) or outside. Most people mount their blinds inside the door. Mounting them on the inside has the added effect of leaving your doors visible, not just totally hidden behind the blinds. Measure out where the brackets will be installed, and mark the spots (they should be parallel). Go ahead and drill the holes. Use wall anchors if necessary. Attach the blind to the brackets by sliding the holders into the divots.

Next, install the rod to the vertical blinds. If your blind has extra clips in the middle then you need to clip these in. If your blind has a liner, line up the back of the liner with the marks. Then drill holes through it at the marks. Hold the liner and clips up to the holes and drive screws through the clip and liner to the doorframe. Push the head rail into place by putting the front edge in the mounting clips and twisting. It’s a good idea to install additional brackets at the bottom to keep the blinds in place and to keep them from flapping all over the place.
