Have you ever noticed a gurgling noise coming from your toilet? Maybe right when you flush it, maybe for a couple of minutes after, or maybe just at random times throughout the day? Seems fairly harmless, but be careful—if you don’t look into what’s causing it, it could get worse with time and end up costing you a pretty penny.

A bubbling toilet is usually a sign of blockage somewhere in your sewage system, either in the pipes themselves or in the ventilation. Perhaps a bird has built a nest over the vent’s exit, or a pliable exhaust pipe (such as the exit from your dryer) has a kink in it or isn’t at the right angle; there may even just be gunk in the pipe, or if it’s been a persistent problem the pipe may be too small in places. Any of these can contribute to bubbles coming out of water drains, and all of them can combine to be a real nuisance.

If none of these seems to be the problem, then you may have a small leak in your pipes that is letting air in. First, try looking at your toilet while it flushes; it should flush out all the old water, then fill itself up to a new level. If it seems to just rise up a bit too much and then slowly drain, there may be blockage in the pipes or the ventilation system. In this case, if the vent isn’t obstructed in any way, you should consider having your pipes roto-rootered. This cleans out buildup such as lime, soap scum, and small debris that may be clinging to your pipes. If that doesn’t work, then have a plumber look at your pipes closely and judge whether any pipes are an ill fit.

If your toilet doesn’t seem to be flushing strangely, but the bubbling persists, the problem may be a leak in your pipes. Look through your house carefully, especially near the bubbling toilet, for wet spots or puddles of water. If you find a leak, then chances are it’s small and some sealant can easily fix it up. If you don’t see it, though, you might consider having a plumber come by and look over your system. Even a tiny leak can cause heavy damage over time.

Tried all these options, but none of them seem quite like the answer? Well, some toilets are designed in such a way so that when they flush, they suck in water as well as air; if that’s the case, you probably don’t have too much to be concerned about. But if this has only recently started happening, it’s always best to ask a pro. Don’t get yourself down if you can’t fix it yourself; most people don’t even realize problems like this until it costs them an arm and a leg to fix, so you’re still quite the handy person.
